Many students are confused by the term “work study.”  Work study is not a loan, it is not a grant, and it is not given to the student all at once. 事实上, the 联邦工作研究 program refers specifically to an employer's ability to subsidize a student's wage. You could earn up to $3000 per 一年 by working while at Grand Valley, and reduce your reliance on loans. Most students find it possible to work 10-15 hours a week and still maintain their academic and social life. Working helps you organize your time, 教会你自律, and provides you with references and mentors to help you reach your future career goals.

Benefits for Student and Employer. 联邦工作 Study program is a federally funded program created to promote greater 就业机会. Students qualify for 联邦工作研究 by filing the Free Application for 联邦 Student Aid (FAFSA), 证明经济需要.  At Grand Valley, the 联邦 Government pays 75% of the student's wages, making it easier for a student to 找到合适的工作.  The on-校园 employer covers the remaining 25% of the student's wages and all fringe costs associated with the 位置.

Eligibility for 联邦工作研究 does not mean that a student will automatically receive the dollar amount listed on his or her financial 资助奖状. A student must find a job and will receive their 联邦工作研究 award in bi-weekly paychecks based on hourly wage 每周工作时间. Students are eligible to earn up to the amount listed in their financial 资助奖状s during the academic 一年.  Students' earnings are NOT applied to their bill as a credit.

求职. A 联邦工作研究 job is not 直接分配给你. You will have to go through the hiring process: search Workday, apply, interview, and then be selected for a 位置. Although you are not automatically placed in a 位置, 联邦工作研究 gives you an advantage over students who do not have a 联邦工作研究 award. This is because on-校园 departments have help from the federal government to pay for your hourly wages.

**Remember that you can apply to any job on-校园, whether it is categorized as GVSU 联邦工作研究 or GVSU Non-Work Study in Workday.

工资归学生. Once you have obtained a job and begin working, you will receive a paycheck every other week and are responsible for using the money for educational expenses. 你的 earnings are NOT applied to your student bill as a credit. 你可以用 your earnings towards expenses such as: books, housing, food, going home during breaks, laundry, etc.

You can select to have your paycheck be direct deposited into a financial institution account of your choice. 如果你不安装 direct deposit, a paper check will be available for pick up at the Student Transaction Windows located in the Student Service Building in 艾伦代尔或Richard M. Talk to your supervisor about their policy. 联邦 Work Study students can continue working after exhausting their 联邦工作研究 award amount for the aid period if their on-校园 employee permits them to do so. The on-校园 employer will be responsible for paying 100% of the student's earnings. 这些 additional earnings will not jeopardize the student's current 经济援助计划. However, the student and supervisor should discuss the employing department's policy prior to the student 开始工作. Some on-校园 employers cannot continue a 位置 once the student's 联邦工作研究 award has been exhausted.

If a student is working hours which will obviously earn more than their award allows, they should review their schedule with their supervisor.

No.  GVSU 联邦工作研究 dollars are for student working on 校园.  这些 funds cannot be used for off-校园 employment.
